  1. My guest today is one of those “surprises” that pops up for a show host.

Bill Franks is Chief Analytics Officer for the International Institute for Analytics (IIA), where he provides perspective on trends in the analytics and big data space. Bill helps guide IIA’s global community of analytics practitioners in determining the best strategy and best path forward for their particular analytics journey.

He also serves on the advisory boards of multiple university and professional analytic programs. Bill is the author of the book Taming The Big Data Tidal Wave (John Wiley & Sons). In that book, he applies his two decades of experience working with clients on large-scale analytics initiatives to outline what it takes to succeed in today’s world of big data. The book made Tom Peter’s list of 2014 “Must Read” books and also the Top 10 Most Influential Translated Technology Books list from CSDN in China.

His second book The Analytics Revolution (John Wiley & Sons) lays out how to move beyond using analytics to find important insights in data and into operationalizing those insights at scale to truly impact a business.

I’m intellectually exhausted from reading that !!! 🙂

But, those books are not the subject of today’s discussion. Bill was asked by his financial adviser to write a one page legacy to leave his children in the event that his life might be unexpectedly ended.
When Bill started writing he realized there so much he wanted to say and leave for his children that he wrote the book “I Need to Tell You Something”.

His writing serves as a parenting workbook to guide parents into asking the important questions for themselves as well as their children on what is it that you want your children to know and remember about you as a parent and a person.
